Encouraging Academic Discussion

Have you heard a teacher use the phrase, “Your child talks too much in class?” Try thinking of those words as a good thing. Gone are the days where we expect our students to passively learn while the teacher does all of the talking.

This year our school-wide instructional goal is to increase student opportunities for discussion in the classroom. Students will learn to develop their own thinking and come up with their own conclusions. We want to help students build their critical thinking skills, including the ability to evaluate, argue, question, reason, and justify.

As a staff we are building the foundation for rich, meaningful student discussions.
Some examples of what your child may experience at school are:

  • Guidelines: Teachers explicitly teach students norms for discussion.  These norms help create a safe environment where everyone’s ideas are respected and valued.
  • Strategic grouping: Teachers use a variety of groupings (i.e. partners, groups) to ensure that all students have the opportunity to participate.
  • Higher level questions: Teachers are carefully planning lessons to ensure they are asking higher level questions. These questions require students to analyze, evaluate, justify, or create.
  • Roles: Students are asked to take on a certain role in a discussion. This allows students to practice specific discussion and/or comprehension skills.  For example, a student may be asked to be a “summarizer” or a “predictor” during a discussion.
  • Language stems: Language stems are suggested sentence starters that help students express themselves. As students become more comfortable with academic discussions the less they need the stems. For example, a “summarizer” may have the following sentence stem,  “So I am hearing the group say….”

Talking is the representation of thinking. Language is how we process and retain information. The more students engage in discussions the more they are able to negotiate meaning, clarify understanding, and process information at a deeper level. Students will become more confident in their opinions and ideas when they can practice discussions in a safe, structured environment.

You can support our school wide focus by encouraging discussions at home. Everyday there are teachable moments:

• “Tell me two things that went well at school today and one that didn’t.”
• “Tell me more about that…”
•  “Give me an example of a rule at school that is fair, and one one that isn’t. How would you change that rule if you were in charge?"
• “Tell me about a teacher who made learning the most fun for you at school today.”
• “I hear you talking a lot about _________ (person). Tell me what you like about them.”
• “You seem very interested in __________________ (activity, show, book, etc). Tell me what you like about that.”
• “What makes you say that?”
• “Can you give me another example?”

Attendance

Help Your Child Succeed in School:
Build the Habit of Good Attendance Early
School success goes hand in hand with good attendance!

Did you know?

  • Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
  • Missing 10 percent (or about 18 days) can make it harder to learn to read.
  • Students can still fall behind if they miss just a day or two days every few weeks.
  • Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.
What you can do
  • Set a regular bed time and morning routine.
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • Find out what day school starts and make sure your child has the required shots.
  • Introduce your child to her teachers and classmates before schools starts to help her transition.
  • Don't let your child stay home unless she is truly sick.  Keep in mind complaints of a stomach ache or headache can be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home.
  • If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make her feel comfortable and excited about learning.
  • Develop back-up plans for getting to school if something comes up.  Call on a family member, a neighbor, or another parent.
  • Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.
When Do Absences Become a Problem?
  • Chronic Absence = 18 or more days
  • Warning Signs = 10 to 17 days
  • Good Attendance = 9 or fewer absences
  • Note: These numbers assume a 180-day school year.
(For more on school readiness, visit attendanceworks.org and reachoutandread.org)

April 2016 Edition of the Twality Spotlight

The Twality Spotlight - April 2016
Message from the Principal
Smarter Balanced Assessment

In May students will take the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBAC). SBAC is a high quality assessment that measures students’ acquisition of the Common Core Standards. In October 2010, Oregon adopted the Common Core State Standards for Language Arts and Mathematics. These standards were designed to challenge students to understand subject matter more deeply, think critically and apply knowledge to real life situations. The results will provide us with meaningful information about each individual student’s skills and about the effectiveness of our instructional program.

We created a testing schedule to minimize disruption and elicit our students’ best effort.  Most students will complete the assessment in one week:
May 9th-13th:          6th Grade
May 16th-20th:        7th Grade
 May 23rd- 27th:       8th Grade

Sixth graders will test in the mornings, Monday through Friday. Seventh and eighth graders will complete most of the testing in two 90-minute blocks on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday (Wednesday and Friday will be normal schedules). Students will be assigned to a proctor (one of their teachers) who will be with them throughout the testing session.

We ask that you help us make this a positive experience for your student by following
some of these tips and requests:
·         Please do not schedule medical or dental appointments, or vacations during the testing window.
·         Encourage your child to get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy breakfast. (Students may bring snacks and water bottles).
·         Please bring headphones.  There is a listening portion on the Language Arts assessment and students typically like using their own headphones.
·         Remind your child that phones will not be allowed in the testing environment. All electronic devices will be secured with the proctor or in their lockers prior to the testing session.
·         Remind your child to bring a book or drawing materials to occupy their time if they complete the assessment before the end of the testing session.
·         Your child may want an extra layer of clothing in case the classroom is cold.

As a school staff, we are committed to creating a stress free environment for testing.  We believe that SBAC is an opportunity for students to demonstrate their learning. Students (and teachers) have worked hard all year and I am confident that each student has achieved their learning goals.

Thank you,

Carol Kinch

We do our P.A.R.T.

During the first quarter, teachers nominated students who persevered though difficult times and situations.  Our Perseverance Awards were a huge success.  We had 44 well deserving students who received specialized awards from their teachers.  We had a hot chocolate bar for the recipients.  The students faces were beaming with pride and it was a special morning for all involved.  For 2nd quarter, we will be recognizing students who model advocacy skills.

"I had no idea that THIS was going to happen today.  You work hard and you think it goes un-noticed and then you get an award.  What a great day!"  - Xavier W.

Safe Routes to School

The healthiest way for kids to get to school is to walk or bike safely.  This is the position of the Tigard Safe Routes to School Program that works with the Tigard-area elementary and middle schools to support and promote the use of safe, healthy and active transportation to and from school.  Back in October over 150 students participated in International Walk & Bike to School Day.  But we want to build off this success to continue to increase the number of students who walk or bike to school.  Twality Middle School is looking to establish a Safe Routes to School Program and we need parent involvement to make this happen.

Twality is in a somewhat unique position.  Given the close proximity of Templeton Elementary and Twality Middle School, there is a natural partnership that emerges, especially given that most Templeton students will attend Twality in the future.  By building a comprehensive SRTS Program at each school we can help ensure that kids are able to walk and bike to school for many years.

Please contact Liz Hormann, Tigard SRTS Coordinator, if you are interested in helping Twality take the next step in its Safe Routes to School Program, or if you have any questions.

You an also learn more and stay up-to-date on project on the Tigard SRTS website.

Click here to read the February edition of the Safe Routes to School newsletter.
